COVID-19: Character Counts Lessons Suspended

Dear Friends,

I am writing to update you on the developing conversations between myself, as a leader of Character Counts Mid Shore, and the Caroline County, Dorchester County, and Talbot County Public School administrations with regards to the COVID-19 coronavirus. As you know, we are committed to taking precautions that protect the health of the students we serve, while also enacting measures that safeguard the wellbeing of our dedicated Character Coaches volunteers. We have also kept our commitment to the Six Pillars of Character at the forefront in making all decisions regarding this matter, asking, "What is the trustworthy, responsible, caring decision to make?"

Given the current risk factors and potential for the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Character Counts Mid Shore has decided to suspend all Character Counts lessons until further notice. We believe this is the most characterful choice to make at this moment in time. While disappointing, this proactive approach will limit the opportunities for this virus to spread. Many of our Character Coaches are members of high-risk population groups, making their continued volunteer service a matter of particular concern. We hope that instituting this change will serve as a critical preventative measure resulting in the sustained health and safety of both our students and our Character Coach volunteers. Updates on the COVID-19 Coronavirus are rolling out quickly, even on an hour-to-hour basis. We will joyfully reinstitute Character Counts lessons when conditions are favorable and we believe that doing so is the safe, responsible choice for all of us.
